Abstract

The concentration of suspended matter, its bacterial colonisation, and the dependence of bacterial colonisation on the discharge rate have been studied in the River Danube near Vienna. Laboratory experiments have been performed and the microbial fluctuations in flasks commonly used to estimate the biological oxygen demand have been studied to evaluate the ability of heterotrophic bacteria to utilise and decompose particulate organic matter.
