Bacteria in the coelenteron of Anthozoa

Abstract

Coelenteric bacterial densities of four Mediterranean anthozoan species, Parazoanthus axinellae (Schmidt), Anemonia sulcata (Pennant), Leptopsammia pruvoti (Lac.-Duth.), Cladocora cespitosa (L.) and one tropical species, Stoichactis giganteum (Forskal) were investigated in situ and under controlled laboratory conditions. Bacterial densities of the coelenteric fluid (CF) of all species obtained from in situ investigations were generally higher than those of the ambient water. Incubation experiments with the CF indicate that all species release bacteriolytic substances if bacterial number exceeds a threshold density; below this critical value there is a build-up of bacteria in the coelenteron.
